10 Tips to Being Professional Online

(From the eyes of a college student)

Keeping a good reputation on an online space can be difficult to manage at times, but it is crucial to your success in the real world. Being professional on social medias is often not the top priority for those under the age of 20; but every post and comment remains a part of your digital footprint and can follow you into adulthood and during job hunts, often coming back to haunt you. To try and set you up for success in the future, here are my 10 tips to remaining professional on your social medias:

1. Think every post throughwhether it be a simple comment or a 24 hour story, anything can come across in a way you did not intend, so be careful!

2. Consider making it private, thought it may seem like everything is public in one way or another, privacy does still exist! If you are feeling torn about posting something, consider posting it to a private or friends only group!

3. Think about future employers, ask yourself, "would you want a future boss to see what you are considering posting in a future background check?"

4. Be kind, one of the biggest contenders for causes of cancel culture or for having your reputation become negative is proof of you performing any sort of cyber bullying!

5. Don't abuse your networks, if you have already created a name for yourself, keep up your image and post what is appropriate to a specific platform.

6. Stay accountable, if you make a mistake, own up to it. Being stubborn that you were in the right while you were truly in the wrong is not worth losing your reputation.

7. Be consistent, a professional image generally has a specific element it brings to the table such as a brand you are promoting or a specific element of your personality you are focusing on - stick to that image! An account that is all over the place in what they are posting or promoting does not appear professional.

8. Be comfortable and aware of what you are an expert in, do not try to share your expertise on something you have no experience with, it will generally not end well! For example, if you have a professional account as an American baseball player, there is no need to share your views on Canadian politics unless you are truly educated on it.

9. Keep your personal life private, whether it be through separate social medias or simply just not sharing your personal life, control your images! Do not overlap what does not need to be included in your professional life. A future employer or coworker does not need to know how much you enjoyed the tacos you ate for lunch or the personal birthday gift your mom got you.

10. You can still be yourself!  Just because you are maintaining a professional image does not mean it has to be a lie! Try to be as honest as possible without oversharing, there is no need to make your professional image a façade!
