Reflection

Reflecting on Semester One

Throughout my first semester as a college student, I have learned many new and valuable lesson. One of the unique elements of furthering your education in college is that you are able to choose classes and topics that truly interest you rather than simply taking required classes like in high school. My social media course this semester was one I was extremely excited to enroll in due to its direct relation to my own personal life. I have not been disappointed so far.

A key idea I thoroughly enjoyed learning more about in this social media course was impression management. This was a concept I believe that many people understand but just may not know the name for it. It is a known concept that you present yourself on social media however you want people to view you. Your social medias determine your online reputation and this often reflects your true reputation and identity in reality. However, through class discussions, I have been able to dive deeper into both the meaning of impression management, as well as the possible negative effects it can have. Social media controls the minds of its users and the impressions we portray on social media play a massive effect into who we are and who we become in reality.

Many topics from this semester were engaging and related directly to my own life experiences. However, there were some that did not hit those same credentials. A least favorite class lecture of mine was online disinhibition. Though still educational, it was difficult to understand and was confusing to distinguish between the different affects of disinhibition. Sections of it did pose beneficial discussion, but for the most part it was a more difficult topic to grasp.

All the concepts we've covered in this course relate to our lives and have proved beneficial to know. From discussion about social movements created online, to learning what it takes to grasp the attention of current social media users, the knowledge gained from this course about the maze of online media usage can only be positive. The simple awareness of how social media is used and the repercussions of using it incorrectly is crucial. This course has provided exactly that, the ability to be aware.

Social media is overwhelming and can be difficult to navigate. Especially when it comes to impression managements on social medias and things like cancel culture, social media causes immense amounts of stress. Your reputation depends on what you do or don't post and it is crucial to be aware of these rules.
