Learn about the Country of India!

How much do you understand what goes on in the world around you? I recently completed a course that enlightened me to the country of India through focusing on the films and videos surrounding the infamous ‘Bollywood.’ Now I’ll be honest, I often find myself lacking the effort to follow important events occurring both in my own country as well as others. However, this class piqued my interest thanks to my love of movies and constant bingeing of television shows! With the hope that this blog reaches some of the younger classmen at Mount St. Mary’s University, I wanted to share some of my favorite moments of the course to instill in them a desire to take it for themselves! From the basic history of India that we learned through reading Mira Kamdar’s, India in the 21 st Century: What Everyone Needs to Know , to the various movies we watched, there is an extensive array of topics covered in this class. In Kamdar’s book, we read of India’s political system and leaders, which I found to be s

7 Habits for Success

Image
Success comes from understanding oneself: your character, motives, attitude, and values. In "The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People" by Stephen R. Covey, personal growth is explored. If you think you don't need to read this book, you might be kidding yourself. I'll convince you why it's worth your time. I'll introduce you to the 7 habits, but for the complete picture, read the book!   The 7 Habits Pyramid from Stephen Covey's Book The Habits Habit One: Be proactive. Habit one sets the stage for other habits by stressing self-awareness and personal responsibility. Being proactive means taking the lead in achieving goals, solving problems, and finishing tasks efficiently. In some recent seminar classes, I had the opportunity to listen to some alumni speak on their own life experiences of how they achieved their goals. It is clear that they accomplished their goals by first learning how they function best in different situations. Covey's circle conce

The Final Blog..... For Now

Wrapping up the semester... It has certainly  been an interesting semester and overall first year as a freshman in college. From experiencing what it means to be a student-athlete, to making new life-long friendships, it is crazy to me that my entire first year of school has already ended. Thanks to my communications class specializing in social media, I have kept this blog throughout my second semester of freshman year. With the theme of being a student-athlete, my blog held the goal of helping out future student-athletes and simply sharing my life from a background view.  I enjoy writing, especially writing about myself, so a personal blog was extremely enjoyable to me and I was excited to hear it could double as completed homework assignments! I think that my blog is a good representation of who I am and what is important to me, so it fits into the other elements of my digital footprint well.

My time learning about ducks

How much do you know about ducks? This week I was provided the opportunity to attend a few different presentations by student's sharing their research from this past year. One of these presentations, A Comparative Analysis of Eider, Scaup, and Mallard Aquatic Locomotion , was about the mechanics of ducks swimming by Eli Thalos. An intriguing topic, Eli explained about the system in which he tracked the circular motions of the ducks' feet while swimming and diving. His research focused on comparing the strengths each type of duck holds as well as where they differ in methods of diving depending on the food they are hunting for. A fellow water polo player, Eli had a relatable spin on the topic of this aquatic animal. As a part of the questioning after his presentation, Eli shared his thoughts on which position in the pool he thought each duck would play if they were to perform in a water polo game. He decided this based on the strengths and weaknesses of each duck. This presenta

The art of a logo

Image
Having now been writing this blog for a couple months, I would say I have (hopefully successfully) intertwined an image of being both an athlete and a normal college student. The style of my blog is a kind of light hearted pink and flowy theme that integrates my discussions on matters of sports in a calm manner. This logo incorporates those same thematic ideas. It shows the same calm pink tone and includes the title of my blog, while also providing an image of a loose body which I view as my athletic side being represented through my concentration on my body.

3 Tips for Future D1 Athletes

Image
The Things you need to know! College itself is always a whole new adventure for students, but if you throw in being a D1 athlete, it gets all the more busy! If you are in high school and considering a future in sports, I highly suggest it, but here are some tips on how to handle it... 1. Learn how to time manage! Life moves fast, and when you are constantly juggling a sport, school, and friends, it is common for it to move too fast. Time management is a crucial skill to all, but especially for athletes. Determining a time for homework that works around practice times and games is a much greater thing than one might think! Not to mention that college is known for being some of the greatest years of your life, this is still possible for committed athletes but it makes it much more difficult to fit in going out with friends on crazy adventures! Just manage your time wisely and it is possible! 2. Take the pressure off yourself when you feel yourself getting stressed. You are only human

The Question of the Future

What do you want to be when you grow up?      Cliché  as it is, this is the question asked in pretty much every stage of your youth, and commonly even through a majority of your earlier adulthood. Not only does it provide a sort of pressure that you should know the answer, but it also provides pressure because the answer is such a significant element of shaping your life as well as your success.       I was not the sort of kid to have an automatic answer or some big dream I was chasing, like being a ballerina or a celebrity. My answer has always been a mystery, even for mini me. Even with the question of, "what are you planning on majoring in when you go to college," I decided on a major early just so I would not have to deal with the questions that follow the answer, "I'm not sure."      Now that I have lived a little more and have some more life experience, and almost a year of college under my belt, I do now have a little idea of what I want to be. Though it
