My time learning about ducks

How much do you know about ducks?

This week I was provided the opportunity to attend a few different presentations by student's sharing their research from this past year. One of these presentations, A Comparative Analysis of Eider, Scaup, and Mallard Aquatic Locomotion, was about the mechanics of ducks swimming by Eli Thalos. An intriguing topic, Eli explained about the system in which he tracked the circular motions of the ducks' feet while swimming and diving. His research focused on comparing the strengths each type of duck holds as well as where they differ in methods of diving depending on the food they are hunting for.

A fellow water polo player, Eli had a relatable spin on the topic of this aquatic animal. As a part of the questioning after his presentation, Eli shared his thoughts on which position in the pool he thought each duck would play if they were to perform in a water polo game. He decided this based on the strengths and weaknesses of each duck.

This presentation was extremely enlightening on a subject I normally do not dwell on for long and I am very grateful to my school for organizing an event that allows for so many interesting topics.
